In celebration of International Women’s Day and the many amazing, strong women who have helped shape my life, I’m hosting a long pose figure painting/drawing session at my studio with an incredible model. Amy is a competitive CrossFitter, breast/ovarian/cervical cancer fundraiser and activist, tattooed beauty, and mother extraordinaire of four daughters, and we’ve invited her to sit for us for a six hour session!

The Art of Creating a Space, Part 2

The studio continues to develop (with the help of the world’s best studio assistant: my mother!), one day at a time! Most of the big projects are behind us at this point, thankfully. Only the sanding and sealing of drawing horses remains before the monumental task of post-construction cleanup, and finally…moving in!!!

One of the first orders of business was to build a model stand for the many life drawing sessions I hope to host.

Foliage Workshop: February 2020

Offering a joyful, green respite from the depths of winter in February, this oil painting workshop will focus on the ever-challenging but infinitely rewarding study of deciduous foliage at close range. Working with a mixed palette of transparent and opaque pigments, we will explore the nuance of light and shadow cascading across the unusually flat, transparent forms that leaves offer. Convincing foliage paintings are so much more about light, repetition, and pattern than they are about literal leaf shapes! Nevertheless, we’ll certainly spend some time exploring the anatomy of leaves and a number of shorthand, painterly gestures for capturing their essence.
