Description: Offering a joyful, green respite from the depths of winter in February, this oil painting workshop will focus on the ever-challenging but infinitely rewarding study of deciduous foliage at close range. Working with a mixed palette of transparent and opaque pigments, we will explore the nuance of light and shadow cascading across the unusually flat, transparent forms that leaves offer. Convincing foliage paintings are so much more about light, repetition, and pattern than they are about literal leaf shapes! Nevertheless, we’ll certainly spend some time exploring the anatomy of leaves and a number of shorthand, painterly gestures for capturing their essence. We will play with the intermingling of warm and cool tones, and discuss the benefits of both muted tones and saturation/chroma. Working both from life and from photos, large and small, fast and slow, we’ll get as intimate as we can manage with dappled light and arboreal wonders in three days. A word to the wise: if you’re interested in this workshop, start collecting your reference photos **TODAY** while the sun is shining and the leaves have not yet let go for the fall. :) Store them away for our winter gathering.
